Street Furniture Australia's Journey to Carbon Neutrality

Spruce & Gander is proud to represent Street Furniture Australia in select US states, bringing their innovative and sustainable street furniture solutions to the American market. We are thrilled to share that Street Furniture Australia has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Australian street furniture company to receive carbon neutral certification across their entire product range and operations.

Understanding Climate Active Certification:

Climate Active™, an Australian government-backed program, supports businesses in their voluntary efforts to measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions. This certification is recognized globally for its rigorous standards, ensuring that companies meet high benchmarks in their sustainability practices.

Climate Active™ is built on international best-practice standards which include:

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol standards.
Australian Standard (AS) ISO 14064 series.
International Standard ISO 14040 series.
ISO 14065:2013 – Greenhouse gases.

Journey to Carbon Neutrality:

Street Furniture Australia embarked on this journey in 2020 with a comprehensive life cycle analysis (LCA) of their products. Over the next two years, they conducted thorough greenhouse gas (GHG) assessments, identifying emission-intensive processes and developing strategies to mitigate their impact. By 2022, they started the certification process for the carbon neutral certification through Climate Active™.

  • Climate Active™ is the result of a four year process, marking a significant step in their climate action journey.

Strategic Emissions Reduction:

The core of this certification is the Emissions Reduction Strategy (ERS), which includes science-based targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets align with the goals of the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. By 2030, Street Furniture Australia commits to reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 15% per dollar of product sold.

Innovative Approaches and Future Plans:

Transitioning to low carbon aluminium is a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint of their products. This material, produced with renewable energy, drastically cuts emissions compared to traditional methods. Additionally, they are exploring resilient, low-carbon alternatives to aluminium battens and implementing circular economy practices to ensure their products are easily repairable and recyclable.

Commitment to Transparency:

Spruce & Gander and Street Furniture Australia are dedicated to transparency in their sustainability efforts. We are committed to sharing progress and new findings with our clients, ensuring they are informed and engaged in our journey towards a greener future. Supporting Sustainable Practices:

Our collaboration extends to encouraging suppliers and contractors to adopt similar environmental standards. We support initiatives like the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ (AILA) declaration of a climate and biodiversity emergency, driving industry-wide change.

Spruce & Gander is excited to bring Street Furniture Australia's sustainable solutions to the United States. We believe that together, we can make a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices in the street furniture industry.
